Product Recalls

** This page will contain recalls of infant sleep products that Foundation staff have received through a computer list serve as of March 3, 2011.  This is NOT an inclusive list of all products that may have been recalled due to health and safety concerns.

For a complete listing or additional information, visit the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, www.cpsc.gov.  The links below will take you to the CPSC's web site to view pictures of the recalled product and additional details.

Baby Products with SIDS Prevention Claims Some baby products are being marketed over-the-counter with claims to cure, treat, or prevent a disease or condition. Because of these claims, these baby products are medical devices, subject to FDA regulation.  A common medical claim being made is the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development 1defines SIDS as "the sudden death of an infant under one year of age, which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history."  The FDA has never cleared or approved a baby product to prevent or reduce the risk of SIDS. The Agency is not aware of any scientific studies showing that a medical device prevents or reduces the risk of SIDS.  Click on the above link for additional information.  (received 10/1/11)

Dutailier Group Recalls Drop-Side Cribs Due to Entrapment and Fall Hazards.  Hazard: The slats on the drop side can detach from the top and bottom rails creating a space between the slats.  An infant or toddler's body can become entrapped in the space, which can lead to strangulation and/or suffocation.  A child can also fall out of the crib. (received 11/03/11)

Dream on Me Recalls Drop-Side Cribs Due to Entrapment, Suffocation, Laceration and Fall Hazards.  Hazard: Full-Size Cribs-The drop-side rail hardware can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib.  When the drop-side rail paritally detaches, it creates a space between the drop side and the crib mattress where a baby can become entrapped, which can lead to strangulation and/or suffocationi.  A child can also fall out of the crib.  Hazard: Portable Cribs-The drop-side rail hardware can break or fail, allowing the drop side to detach from the crib or fall unexpectedly.  In addition, th eportable crib mattress support hardware and the drop-side release latch can break easily, and the slats can loosen or break and detach from the crib.  Children can also cut themselves on exposed hardware inside the cribs. (received 05/25/11)

Second Infant Death Prompts Re-Announcement of Delta Enterprise "Safety Peg" Drop-Side Crib Recall.  Hazard:  Missing safety peges can create a situation where the cribs' drop-side rail disengages from the track.  This can create a hazardous space in which an infant can become entrapped and suffocate. (received 3/23/11)

IKEA Recalls to Repair Cribs Due to Mattress Support Collapse; Cribs Pose Entrapment and Suffocation Hazards.  Hazard: The four bolts provided with some SNIGLAR cribs to secure the mattress support are not long enough. This can cause the mattress support to detach and collapse, creating a risk of entrapment and suffocation to a child in the crib.   (received 2/18/11)
